"Thinking caps" popped into my mind, too, when I saw those helmets. I like your take on the picture--the teacher getting the students to think before he reads to them and to think about reaping what they sow.

Those are headsets tuned to the radio waves coming from the wires above which are attached to the Dictaphone machine. This is a secretarial class.

We had them in our high school back in the 50's except by then most taking secretarial classes were girls.

These guys aren't typing though, they are just listening. Typing to the Dictaphone came after getting used to listening it.

Funny, I took typing and shorthand, but it must have been before dictaphones. I am always too old or too young for something. lol
