Happy Memorial Day!

Monday, May 30, 2011

Some of my most pleasant memories as a child centered on using my father's woodworking tools. He worked many part time jobs along with his full time one. One of them was cabinetry. Scraps of discarded wood were kept in a barrel and my sister and I could help ourselves. We made what not shelves, jewelery boxes, bird houses, and just about anything our childhood imagination could dream up. Our father painstakingly made sure we knew how to handle the power tools safely and could measure and create what we imagined. Perhaps that is why when I heard about these nesting dolls I was utterly fascinated.

Each is hand crafted and painted and they sit one inside the other.  If my father was still alive he would be examining these very closely trying to figure out how to duplicate them. They are made of very soft and pliable wood and hand carved and painted. I am not sure he could create such art, but he would certainly appreciate it.

Today is Memorial day. A day to honor those we have lost while serving our country, but why don't we take it a step further and honor all those we have lost. Remember what they left us; the talents and memories they have given, the tradition and ethics and the love.

Thanks so much for visiting me today. Take care and have a safe and beautiful holiday with your family and or friends.

Thankful Thursday - Art

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Ever had a day when everyone was frustrated? All those frustrated individuals chose that day to call and it seemed their calls were mine, their problems mine too. To top that off it rained all day. The day was dismal and gray, but when I headed out the door the gray clouds started to turn white. The sun shone through the clouds giving them an illuminating glow.

I got out at 6 and had something to drop off at Jeannie's so I headed out to her house quickly. I only stayed a moment planning to get a couple water shots at the lake on the way home then post them for Watery Wednesday. I got in and cooked then started downloading the pictures. Blogger is giving me the blues. It was taking forever to download the pictures and then they would not upload to my blog so I went to visit a few blogs and leave comments, then to a few articles and leave comments. After two hours I gave up, shut down the computer and went to bed. Here are the pics that were supposed to be used for Watery Wednesday.

Something about the beauty, tranquility, and stillness of the water...

Sometimes the beauty of what we do outweighs all the obstacles. We lay in the dirt or the wet grass to get a flowery close up, we stand in the cold to snap photos, we deal with slow and tired computers and spam artists....we love our art. :-)

Thanks, Amanda, for inviting us to play!
We need some fun to lighten the way!

1. What is the craziest thing you ever did for art? I crocheted an afghan for my queen size bed. I worked on it daily while taking the subway back and forth to work. Sometimes I crocheted it while hanging on a strap on the subway and being jostled from the Bronx to NY.

2. Would you do it again? I would in a heartbeat, except I no longer ride a subway. :-)

He got my attention

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

I was trying to concentrate. I had several books open along with different windows on my computer. I was researching lecithin for my latest article on factoidz. It was fascinating. Can you believe that a nutrient thought to be a waste of money  in 1996 was now getting serious attention for it's ability to improve brain function and assist in the prevention of heart attack and stroke? I am constantly amazed at how the information is forever changing on nutrition! Even with all this amazing information at my finger tips, the sun began to set and the glow flooded my dining room through my front windows,  with the glorious colors calling to me. Camera around my neck I ran for the door.

Sorry, I am not in the picture, but I cannot hold a candle to His glory, :-) and I'm not orange!

Not JUST a Tree

Sunday, May 22, 2011

A couple are strolling
On this sunny day
I approach the building
They stop on their way
They look at me puzzled
What does she see?
They turn to each other
It's JUST a tree!
They politely wait
At any rate
While I admire
The Golden Rain Tree.
The fern like leaves
Raise to the sky
So proud of themselves
That they've caught my eye
Nature by God

Thankful Thursday - Support

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

My daughter proudly invited me to my grand children's dance recital and I was only too glad to go. Ruby and her husband, Aaron spent their last few dollars buying up all the flowers they could find at our local supermarket and we sorted through them to salvage three bouquets of flowers so she could give them to our dancers to show our support.

I apologize for the quality of the photos. We sat in the balcony. There was a tremendous turn out to watch the dancers even though it was cold and rainy and my point and shoot did its best. So did our young performers. I am so proud of the effort they put into this fine show.

1.  How do you show your support to those you love? Maybe your ideas will help others to be supportive. :-)

2. What do you remember as being a supportive moment that you really appreciated?  It's funny but sometimes we get support in unexpected places. When I was raising my four children by myself, working full time and going to school full time, my oldest son would just be so contrary sometimes. He would blast his music when I would try to catch a minute to cram for an exam or find some way to be distracting when I was studying..

One day he told me I was his inspiration. He worked two jobs while attending high school, and was a B student. I was getting a 4.0 in college. He felt competitive towards me so would try to shake me. He was getting a B to be like me. So I had to keep getting an A. :-)

Thanks so much for visiting me today. Your visits mean so much and I cannot wait til I get out of work tomorrow to return some of them. This post linked to Thursday Two Questions. Take care and God bless!

Flowing Water

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Tucked behind the doctor's office where few even know
in a dozen other places the water is life's flow
I'm so glad the ice melted, and the water's every where
Michigan is very lucky to have more than our share.

Life By the Water

Guest post written by Christina Taylor

My husband and I just moved down to Florida to be a little closer to his parents. They are getting a little older now, and he wants to be there to help them with various things in their lives. He's such a good son and does everything he can to ensure his parent's comfort and well-being. The other day he helped put new furniture in their small house, and he also took his father for a Hearing Aids prices, as! he is finally needing a help in that area. Personally, I am glad that we are able to be so close to them.

Since we moved down here, life has been a little quieter than we are used to. We used to work in the city, and I must say that it is a complete 180 living down here. There isn't much in the ways of things to do, but there is a lot of natural beauty. For people who really love being by the water, this is the place to be. I can't say we'll be here forever, but it's definitely a good place to be for the time being.

Cat Attack

It is the night before Mother's day and I am multi tasking, as usual. Talking to my friend on my cell; researching and writing an article; cooking dinner; and I hear a commotion on the coffee table...

My Sanity Break

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

On a quiet little bridge stretched across a narrow little road between a couple factories I found this flowering tree. Now had I not been in pursuit of more water shots I would not have stopped...

Although hubby fusses, I have a compulsion to stop in out of way places and explore nature. It's like a sanity break. :-) Perhaps he's right, perhaps not... What do you think?

I believe a wife should be submissive to her husband, but a husband should be submissive too. If we two are to be one there needs to be compromise. Do you find compromise necessary and useful in your relationship?

A loaf of bread and a long legged bird

Saturday, May 7, 2011

This particular grocery store features more than just food. On the outskirts of the parking lot it has a pond and I am always on the alert for whatever interesting things I might find there. Mr. or Mrs. Crane, as I am not sure which, wasn't enthused to find me prowling near his/her hangout  today so it took a step back every time I took a step forward.
I loved watching its steps. First the neck would "crane" with its beak poking forward then it would lift its foot from the water as if tip toeing and gingerly stretch it forward watching me the whole time. For more about cranes check out this link. There are 15 different species and I found the Grey Crowned one to be really attractive.

Balls Rayanna can't fetch

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Just a short time ago, Jeannie was getting her knee replaced. One night another friend joined me and we both visited her, but as we pulled up we both looked at one another and asked "What are these?" They look like giant jingle bells. We wondered if they had anything to do with any of the hospital communications? Do you have any idea? By the way, Rayanna is my mother's cock-a-poo and she loves to fetch.

Question 2. A writing site, Triond, has responded to our request regarding  raising quality and is sponsoring  a quality challenge this month. Bear fruit

As I passed a gorgeous blooming tree on the highway, I remembered the one around the corner I had taken pictures of last year. I wondered if it was blooming yet so (of course) I drove around the corner. From a distance, it was not spectacular, but upon closer inspection....

I was not disappointed and I hope God is not disappointed in me. I hope that I do not get in the way of His beauty shining through me.
